چكيده
Students at high schools in Iran need to develop their listening skill by recognizing and
overcoming the barriers in listening comprehension. Listening strategies and activities need to
be applied because they help learners deal with incoming speech by comprehension. This
study aimed to explore the extent to which high school teachers incorporate listening strategies
and activities into teaching listening and perceive listening skill as a useful skill compared to
other skills and sub skills. Moreover, the study sought to find out the difficulties encountered by
students with listening lessons in high schools of Fardis, Iran. To this end, a questionnaire,
teachers interviews, students interviews and an observation were devised. Thirty EFL
teachers who teaching in public high schools completed the questionnaire, ten classes were
observed for three sessions each and ten teachers’ interviews and a study on students’ books
and exams were conducted in ten public high schools and ten students participated in the
study. The data collected through the questionnaire were analysed using the Statistical
Packages for Social Science (SPSS, Version 10.0). Frequencies, percentages were calculated
for the first part of the questionnaire to answer the first research question and means and
standard deviation to analyse the second part of the questionnaire to answer the second
research question. Observation and interview results were analysed by clustering and
descripting the data. Results revealed that while at least two thirds of listening teaching
strategies commonly mentioned in the literature in pre-listening, while-listening, and post-
listening stages were used by Iranian teachers, there was a lack of emphasis on listening skill in
students’ final score and in schools’ curriculum. The result also revealed the problems students
faced while listening. Accordingly, it was recommended that all the EFL teachers should feel
responsible and use various types of teaching strategies as much as possible effectively and
allocate enough time to teach this skill and help students to improve it and overcome its
difficulties.
