Abstract
One of the major problems the EFL learners in Iran face is developing their vocabulary and one of the instructions for learning vocabulary is flipped learning. Flipped learning is an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional learning environment by delivering instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom (Abeysekera, Lakmal, and Philip Dawson, 2015). This true experimental study endeavored to find the effect of flipped instruction on vocabulary learning among Iranian introverted vs. extroverted EFL learners. In the pursuit of the purpose of this study, at the beginning of the term, 120 EFL learners were selected randomly from Pro. Hashtroodi Institute in Hashtrood, Iran. Oxford Placement Test was applied to homogenize the participants. As a result, 80 EFL learners were selected out of 120. The participants were then given Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to categorize them into extrovert and introvert learners. After that, there were two groups; one control group and one experimental group. In control group there were 30 introvert and extrovert learners. Experimental group consisted of two groups. There were 25 introvert learners in one of the experimental groups, and 25 extrovert learners in the other experimental group. After grouping the learners, VKS (Vocabulary Knowledge Scale) was administrated to the participants. For the sake of this study 100 words were taken from 504 essential words books. Based on the results of this scale, 80 words were selected, which were
totally new and unfamiliar to learners. Then, Learners of control group received the usual and traditional way of teaching vocabulary for the same words and Learners of each experimental
group were asked to watch videos at home as more as possible. These videos were recorded by instructor. After ten sessions, they received a post-test designed by the instructor of the research. Through this study, it was found that flipped instruction had more significant effect on vocabulary learning of Iranian EFL learners. It was also revealed that there was no significant difference between introvert and extrovert learners. The findings of this study can be useful to teacher trainers, language teachers and language learners.
