چكيده
In classroom setting, establishing an appropriate communication between teachers and students is substantial. This communication is a system made of both verbal and nonverbal communication types and it is asserted that the latter conveys more noticeable amount of meaning. This study considered the teachers' use of nonverbal communication in two stages of cognitive development in EFL setting. The purpose of this research was to investigate the quantity and types of nonverbal communication used by EFL teachers in Kids' and Teenagers' level classes in boys' branch of Kish Language Institute in Rasht. In order to do so, 10 female teachers who had classes in both Kids' and Teenagers' level were selected randomly. 10 Teenagers' and 10 Kids' classes were observed and video recorded. According to the teachers' performances a checklist of 11 categories including Kinesics, Proxemics, Haptics, Oculesics, Chronemics, Vocalics, Sound symbols, Silence, Posture, Locomotion and Expression, was filled for each class. In order to find out the relationship between age and quantity of nonverbal communication Chi square was used. The results showed that there was a relatively small though statistically insignificant relationship between the quantity of teachers’ nonverbal communication and EFL learners’ age. For investigating the relationship between types of nonverbal communication used by teachers chi square followed by eta test were used and the results showed significant relationship just in some categories as “Locomotion,” “Posture”, “Haptics”, and “Proxemics”.
