چكيده
Scrutinizing Young Learner Education (YLE) English textbooks as an indispensable preoccupation of parents and teachers, sheds light on the importance of innovative textbooks evaluation as a part of material development in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogical systems. The purpose of this research was to comparatively evaluate two textbooks, i.e., Play & Learn English by Ostadagha (2013) in Iran, based on the Montessori Method and another, Super Safari by Puchta, Gerngross, and Lewis-Jones (2015) in England based on the Total Physical Response (TPR) method, in order to shed light on the strong and weak points of two textbooks for kids under six years old. To this aim, 102 parents and 30 teachers randomly rated their views of two mentioned textbooks through an adapted close-ended questionnaire, and structured interviews. Additionally, 10 sessions of observations supplemented the investigator triangulation for this comparative evaluation. The obtained results manifested that Play & Learn English textbook along with propounding merits of its methodology, teachability, and flexibility in teaching English to young learners was more suitable than Super Safari textbook with writing skill and attractive appearance and design. The findings could hopefully help teachers, parents, and developers make informed decisions regarding choice, design, and development of YLE English textbooks.
