“Solitude” is a necessary and undeniable state in human beings’ lives. It is the vital condition to understand the inner mysteries of self, the existence of mankind, the universe and God. When an individual spends time in a self-chosen “solitude”, the truth and reality of her/his entity, and in a broader scope the beauties of world, and God would be revealed. Existentialism studies the existence and conditions of men’ lives in the world. “Solitude” is an important aspect of this very study. Gabriel García Márquez’ masterpiece; One Hundred Years of Solitude portrays the “solitude” of individuals, societies, countries, and in a general scope the whole world. Márquez’ concerns about the condition of people in the universe is admirable. Hence, the study of “solitude” as the major theme of the novel demands considering many factors in order to reach the various connotations of the so-called concept, which is in fact the present thesis’ aim.
