چكيده
.These days, EFL textbooks have a great influence on students, learning, teacherʹs
education, and language institutes quality. So, it is crucial for institutes and teachers to
select an appropriate textbook but having knowledge of the structure and components of
the textbook plays an important role in understanding the studentsʹ learning and even in
selecting and developing the textbooks. In this study, researchers tried to analyze the
attitudinal structure of the selected texts in Top Notch and ILI English textbooks based
on the Appraisal framework to see which components (Affect, Judgment, and
Appreciation) were more strongly represented in different levels (basic and advanced)
of these textbooks. A descriptive -analytical corpus study was designed to check and
compare the frequency of attitudinal meaning components, that is, Affect, Judgment and
Appreciation in basic and advanced Top Notch and ILI textbooks. The results of the
analyses show that, in basic level, the percentages of inscribed attitudinal components
are higher than invoked ones but in advanced level, the percentages of invoked attitudes
are more than inscribed attitudinal lexis in ILI and Top Notch texts. This pattern
indicates that these textbooks prefer more explicit attitude in basic level and more
implicit attitude in advanced level. Further details reveal that Top Notch textbooks have
used more Judgment components in their basic level and more Affect components in
their advanced level while ILI textbooks have used more Appreciation components in
their basic level and more Judgment components in their advanced level.
