چكيده
This study examined the effect of teaching critical reading strategies on reading comprehension development of Iranian EFL students. The piloted KET (key English Test) was administrated to homogenize the participants regarding their language proficiency. From among 90 students, 60 of them were selected by this test. They were randomly assigned to critical reading (experimental) and regular reading (control) groups. A pre-test included 40 questions on IELTS academic reading comprehension was administered to gauge their language proficiency. Both groups passed successive sessions of teaching but in different methods. Afterwads, the critical reading group got familiarized with seven strategies of critical reading and how to apply them to their reading tasks. However, the control group received no treatment and the traditional way of teaching was applied. Finally, the same test was administered as post-test to both groups to complete. Then the statistical analysis was run through independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test. It was explored from the study that learnersʹ reading comprehension skill improved more when they were provided with critical reading strategy treatment. The null hypothesis of the study was rejected according to the results of the data analysis. The findings indicated that both the critical reading and regular reading techniques helped the participants to improve their reading comprehension. However, the results of the IELTS post-test strongly indicated that developing reading comprehension through the critical techniques was more effective and efficient. In other words, the participants who were exposed to critical reading techniques exhibited enhanced development of the reading comprehension.
