Among the factorsinfluencing studentsʹ learning especially in language learning area, motivation is thought to be a key factor and an important reason for different achievements. On the basis of many past researches conducted on the role ofmotivation in achievement of students in learning a foreign language, it has been proved that existence or nonexistence of motivation among students can lead to achievement or non-achievement of the students in that area to some degree. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine and show the relationship between achievement level of students learning English as a foreign language in highschools and types and amount of motivation. The subjects involved in the present study were students selected from three high schools in Feridonkenar. To fulfill the purpose of the study, the students were divided into two groups of high and low achievers by using their mean scores in English language classes to determine their proficiency level. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry- interviews and questionnaires, were used to collect research data to determine the types and amount of motivation affecting the studentsʹ different level of achievement. The main statistical instrument used in this study was correlational coefficient. By employing the SPSS program and analyzing the returned questionnaires and collected research data, the final results and findings from the study showed some factsconcerningrelationship between students & different level of achievement in English language learning and types and amount of motivation.The results of the present study showed that all the four types of motivation focused in this study, internal(personal)/educational systemand school/family and classmates/teacher-related motivational factors had significant correlation with achievement of students and also there was a significant correlation between achievement of students and amount of motivation in this study. The findings of the study could be useful for researchers and teachers in improving studentsʹ achievement by conducting effective teaching and learning strategies to develop studentsʹ motivation.
